Rafael Benitez is apparently looking to bring Arjen Robben back to England as he plans his summer spending with Liverpool.

Having recently signed a new deal at the club, the former Valencia coach is thought to be looking at the future and already wants to build for next season.

Both AS and Marca, citing English sources, claim that his top priority is Robben, who has been in excellent form for Real Madrid, leading them to within just six points of Barcelona in La Primera.

The Dutch international joined the Spanish side from Chelsea and whilst he has struggled with injuries, he could be the natural winger than Benitez is after.

At the moment Liverpool are using both Albert Riera and Dirk Kuyt on the flanks, but suffice to say that - despite their recent productivity in front of goal - neither appear to have the speed and trickery of Robben.

According to the Daily Star, Benitez will have around £30 million to spend next summer and he could well make a bid of around £20 million for Robben.

The problems with him leaving Real Madrid are clear though: firstly; the club would be reluctant to sell the winger due to his sparkling form and secondly; with a new president coming in, it would surely be foolhardy to sell one of the best players to a European rival.

Even at the price of £20 million it seems highly unlikely that Real Madrid would be tempted as Robben has become one of their most important players this season.

General Motors Plans Volt Battery Factory in Michigan

By the end of 2010, General Motors expects to have its first production ready electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, in showrooms across the USA. Highly anticipated, the Volt represents a new direction the giant automaker is going by producing a line of highly energy efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles for the masses.

Before GM can produce one Volt, the company has to have a factory in place that can produce the four hundred pound lithium-ion battery pack that will power the car. To that end, GM has announced that a factory in Michigan will assemble the fuel cells that will be made by South Korea's LG Chem Corporation, investing $30 million to get the job done.

"The design, development and production of advanced batteries must be a core competency for GM, and we've been rapidly building our capability and resources to support this direction," Wagoner said. "This is a further demonstration of our commitment to the electrification of the automobile and to the Chevrolet Volt - a commitment that now totals more than $1 billion."

A location for the plant hasn't been finalized, but the car company is in talks with state and local officials about the placement of the facility. GM expects that the facility will be put quickly in place, allowing the company to start output by early 2010.

"Our announcements are part of a comprehensive advanced battery strategy for GM that is expanding along two pathways," Wagoner said. "First, we're identifying core competencies - such as battery research, development and assembly - and integrating these fundamentals into our product development and manufacturing operations. We believe this will become a competitive advantage for GM, and will be critical to GM's long-term success. Secondly, we're building a roster of battery suppliers and academic experts from around the globe, and leveraging their specialized abilities to develop battery chemistries and cell designs, as well as future automotive battery engineers."

The Volt is expected to be the first of many electric cars built by GM over the coming years. Supplement power will be provided by a 1.4L I4 engine, but on electric power alone the Volt will have a forty mile range. GM expects that the car will appeal to commuters who will be able to plug in their cars each night for a recharge and go about their business the following day.

GM has recently displayed the Cadillac Converj concept, a stylish two door coupe, that is yet another example how the Volt platform could be utilized. GM expects that the Volt will also be sold in Europe under its Opel brand and perhaps in Australia as a Holden model.

England's Thierry Henry, the explosive striker for soccer's beleaguered Arsenal team, has decided to cut ties and venture toward greener pastures with the Barcelona club. His recent decision has left fans disappointed but not surprised, as the deal for the move has dragged on for almost a year.

Of the move, Henry has recently been quoted as saying, "I have said so many times why I left Arsenal. I don't want to go back to that, but it was hard to leave. I always said that if I ever left Arsenal, it would be to play for Barcelona."
Well, now Henry's wish has come true.

Since Arsenal's 2006 loss for the Champion's League to Barcelona, fans and those 'in-the-know' have believed that Henry would make the move to the team that beat them, but then Henry turned around and signed a new contract with Arsenal.

However, the marriage has not lasted long, and the deal has been struck. The lucrative deal between Henry and Barcelona will make the Frenchman a very rich man indeed. The 29-year-old signed a four-year contract, which also includes a release clause.

Thierry Henry has played with England's Arsenal team since 1999, playing in more than 250 games and scoring almost 200 goals. However, he spent much of 2006 on the sidelines recovering from injuries incurred in March, which included hamstring, back and foot problems.

Nevertheless, during his illustrious career with Arsenal, Henry shot quickly to the top as the club's leading goal scorer, and in the 2001-02 season, he netted 32 goals. The following season, he scored 42 goals and offered his best with almost two dozen assists. That year, the FIFA's Technical Study Group also named him Man of the Match in three out of five matches for France.

In 2005, Henry rose to club captain, and that year also saw Henry become the club's all time top goal scorer, and he followed that year up with another successful year at breaking records in 2006. Henry is the only player to win the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year three times, in 2003, 2004 and 2006 and has been awarded the French Player of the Year four times. But perhaps the finest validation for Henry came in 2004 when football icon Pele named Henry one of the top 125 greatest living football players.

His early days with Arsenal found Henry playing wing, but team adjustments placed him at the striker spot at center, where it soon became clear he was incredibly gifted. Henry did, and has continued to, impress fans around the world with his lightening quick speed and large dose of natural talent.

Whether Henry will find what he is seeking with Barcelona, a Champion's League, remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain: Arsenal will miss one of their most gifted players, and all eyes will be on Thierry Henry as he begins a new chapter of his life with Club Barcelona.

Drivers 16 years of age are at high risk for traffic accidents due to their immaturity and limited driving experience. A series of five research papers published in a September 2002 supplement of Injury Prevention addresses this risk among young drivers. The papers make a compelling case for graduated driver licensing (GDL), the system of laws and practices that gradually introduce young drivers into the driving population.

Graduated Driver License programs can be found in 31 states around the country. The GDL program permit young drivers to safely gain driving experience before obtaining full driving privileges and are generally targeted towards 14 – 17 year old teen drivers.

Most states require an adult with a valid driver’s license be present when the teen is driving. Additionally the teen driver is required to enroll in a certified Drivers Ed course and must hold a learner’s permit for at least 3 – 6 months before taking an “operators driving license” test.

It is during these 3 – 6 months when teen drivers with learner’s permits mostly drive the family vehicle with their parents. While GDL programs allow the teen driver to gain experience in a family vehicle with a parent, other drivers are not aware who is behind the wheel of this vehicle.

Notifying other drivers will give them the ability to consider choices when approaching a vehicle operated by a teen driver. We can increase traffic safety and awareness. FTC Wants Your Two Cents on DRM

By the end of 2008, Spore -- and the controversy surrounding its digital rights management (DRM) -- nearly singlehandedly introduced the issue of copy protection in PC gaming to a wider swath of consumers that may not have given it much thought before. And if you happen to have a particularly strong opinion about it now (and we're guessing you do), then good news: It looks like the Federal Trade Commission will be investigating the fairness of DRM to consumers in March, and they're looking for your opinions (via GameCyte).

All you need to do is head over to the FTC's official form to post a comment, fill out the necessary fields, write your thoughts, and send it in. The FTC assures that "all timely and responsive public comments" will be considered, so long as you get your comments in before the deadline: January 30.

Do note, though, that any comments you send (along with any personal information you fill out) will be added to the public record of the investigation, and accessible by, well, anyone who wants to access it. So before you bust out that perfect, virtuoso string of expletives you carefully constructed years ago and were saving for just this sort of special occasion, stop and consider if you really want Internet flame forever associated with your name in a public FTC record.

Eidos Confirms Around 30 Laid Off at Crystal Dynamics

It's the way of the world in these dour times, and here we have yet another round of bad industry news: Joystiq reports that Eidos has confirmed approximately 30 people were laid off at Tomb Raider Underworld developer Crystal Dynamics yesterday.

When asked why the cuts were made, an Eidos representative gave a curiously paradoxical answer: "We have increased the focus on the Tomb Raider franchise at Crystal Dynamics; regrettably this has resulted in the reduction in headcount." That logic doesn't seem to follow to us, and it's surprising Eidos didn't simply cite the same reason Midway, Electronic Arts, Free Radical, Factor 5, and Aspyr cited for their recent layoffs and financial troubles: the recession.

As Joystiq points out, these layoffs follow reports (via Edge-Online) that Eidos was disappointed with the sales of Tomb Raider Underworld during the holiday season. What's curious about that, though, is that it's not as if Underworld was a flop -- it sold 1.5 million copies, which is nothing to sneeze at. Makes you wonder just how well Eidos needed Underworld to sell for it to be considered a success...

New iPhone Game - Tic A Tac Poker

Just spent the last 30 minutes downloading and playing a really fun new game for the iPhone and iPod Touch called Tic A Tac Poker.

This game has been on mobile phones in the past but if you're not familiar, Tic A Tac Poker combines Poker and Tic Tac Toe to create a poker game with eight opportunities to put together your best hands. Play down, across or diagonally as you place your cards very carefully and strategically on the game board.

There are three games included in Tic A Tac Poker:

1. Tic A Tac Poker: Make as many 3 card poker hands as you can. You get more points for the harder levels (less discards).

2. Draw Poker: Play 3 or 5 card draw poker head to head against the dealer. Winner of each hand gets to place a card on the game board. Win points by making as many poker hands as you can.

3. Poker Challenge: Play against the clock as you make the winning poker hand before time runs out.

It is very well done, the artwork is fantastic and the game is simple to learn and play. It can be very challenging, however so you'll get hours of enjoyment out of this game. It also has a live, worldwide, high score leaderboard and community which I haven't played with yet but is a nice feature.

The guys at AppVee just reviewed it here and gave it 4.2 out of 5 stars. You can also watch a video of the gameplay on the AppVee site.

The game sells for $1.99 and is an absolute steal at this price. If you have an iPhone and like Poker, download it from now and you will be happy.

Halo Wars and Dawn of War 2 Highlights of Microsoft CES Booth

Visiting the Microsoft booth at CES became a sort of videogame Easter egg hunt the past few years. You never knew what you would find, but it seemed they always managed to hide a handful of games we hadn't seen around the displays. Not this year. With a new single ribbon wall replacing the pods used in prior years Microsoft chose to focus primarily on their big Xbox 360 games from this past holiday season.

Two upcoming games did get front placement at least. Halo Wars, only a couple months away from its March 3 release date, looked pretty much in final form. After checking it out I agree with the point Scooter made in our last Halo Wars preview about the lengths Ensemble Studios has gone to to ease players into the game. By the end of the extensive tutorial system moving the camera with thumbsticks and using the unit selection system felt comfortable. And the game nails that sense of playing with a set of toys you often get from real time strategy games. Halo fans should dig sending out Warthog patrols and rumbling across the map with Scorpion tanks.

There are a lot of PDF viewers out there. A few I've experienced, many I have not. There are also multiple uses for PDF files: books, documents, manuals, etc. Typical PDF viewers are great for casually browsing a file, but what if you are going to be using it for an extended amount of time, like actually reading a novel? In this situation, plain PDF viewers are insufficient. If you find yourself in this very position, worry not! Tofu is here like some sort of text-based superman.

Why, specifically, is Tofu the best app to use for reading books in PDF format? Well, in my opinion, the printed word, transferred to digital means, just doesn't look right. It's flat and monotonous and doesn't pull you in, like a printed book. When you open a file in Tofu, it sets the text up in columns. You then have the option to change the font, the text color, the background color, AND the size of the columns, amongst other things. This allows you to ENTIRELY customize your PDF reading experience, preventing it from becoming stale, disorienting, or painful. Tofu also has a smooth scrolling preference, which slightly animates the act of "turning the page", which makes the app even more enjoyable to use.

In addition to all of those insane features, Tofu has integrated speech recognition into the app. You can turn pages with your voice! Granted you have to be in a sufficiently quiet place for the commands to register, but it's a novel experience all the same. If voice commands aren't your thing, how about the Apple remote? Get yourself something like Mira, and it's as simple as the click of a button. You can program any of them to implement whatever keystroke you desire.

If you're going to read a book in PDF form, then Tofu is literally a must-have application. You can completely customize your reading experience, including fonts, colors, and column width, and control it at your leisure, using either your computer, your Apple remote, or your voice. How can it get any more simple?

Blackberry Storm: First Impressions

I strolled into my local Verizon store this week to play with the Storm, the new Blackberry phone and latest touch-screen device to hit the marketplace. I am a huge fan of touch-screen devices, and love that all the top OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are pumping these devices into the marketplace to compete with Apple. The Sprint Instinct (by Samsung, home brewed operating system), T-Mobile G1 (hardware by HTC / operating system by Google, an Android phone), The Voyager from Verizon (made by LG, homegrown operating system) have all entered the marketplace in the last year to compete with the iPhone. They are all decent attempts to capture some marketshare, but they all fall short in terms of living up to the iPhone.

If the iPhone is a 9 out 10, the Storm is a 7. That is an overall score. Its touch-screen usability gets a 5, and here is why: when using the keyboard, the whole screen acts as a button, and each keystroke must be accompanied by not only a touch, but a push as well. It could be that I am way to calibrated to the iPhone, but I have already read of others feeling the same way. When you touch a letter, it only highlights the key; you then need to press the screen to confirm. It was very difficult to type, as I had to constantly look at the screen to see what letter I am pressing, and of course my fat fingers are covering that part which I need to see. Please, drop in to the local Verizon store yourself and you will understand how this is not that cool.

I had a few goals in mind, one was to review the typing on the keyboard, another to simply navigate the device and get a feel for the usability. Here, the device gets higher marks. One of my complaints about Blackberrys in general is the poor way in which you navigate around to perfrom any function. I loathe the little menus you must use to save, edit, etc. With this new device, the interface is way better, and its far easier to navigate around.

Lastly, though, one item that surprised me was lack of WiFi. Hello? Enough said.

Bottom line: Of all the touch screen devices / smart phones out there, iPhone is the champ by a big margin. I would rate them thus:

Papa John's Hits $1M in Mobile Sales

Pizza chain Papa John�s has generated more than $1 million in sales from mobile Web orders in less than six months after offering that option to consumers.

The milestone comes after Papa John�s earlier this year crossed more than $1 billion in overall online sales � up from $400 million in 2007 � and launched a Facebook page that quickly attracted 175,000-plus fans in less than a week.

�It tells us that consumers are changing,� said Bob Ford, director of digital marketing at Papa John�s. �We really live in a world of convenience where people have that cell phone with them all the time."

Created in July, Papa John�s mobile Web ordering system enables pizza lovers to set up an account and place orders directly from their Web-capable mobile devices. The mobile site is accessible at http://mobile.papajohns.com.

The game works on Symbian Series 60 devices only for now, and if you want to check out a demo version of the game, click here. I read a couple reviews including this one from the folks at PocketGamer and it sounds like the usability is a little hard to get used to, but once you learn it can be pretty fun.

I've been told that iPlay (one of the Top 10 mobile game publishers worldwide) is going to distribute this game through carriers around the world but I haven't read any news on this subject yet. That would be a huge win for eyeSight and would certainly validate the technology. A number of companies are trying to improve mobile games by getting away from the awkward cellphone keyboard and eyeSight's approach looks promising.

Storm Preliminary Sales Strong

It looks like the Blackberry Storm is a hit. Verizon has not released any definitive sales numbers yet, but analysts cited by Unstrung put preliminary sales in the range of 100,000 to 120,000 units.

"Checks at Verizon retail outlets affirm stores quickly sold out of the BlackBerry Storm after opening Friday morning, given sizable lineups and pent-up demand," RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky said in a note to investors.

Customers from coast to coast complained of long lines to get the first touchscreen BlackBerry. Verizon notes on its website that there is limited availability of the Storm, and that orders made online will ship Dec. 8. It is unclear whether this means there will be limited availability in retail stores ahead of this weekends shopping rush.

Working Designs is long gone, but their legacy of bringing Japanese classics over to America remains intact. And now they may have a chance to do it again, minus perhaps only a few Bill Clinton jokes.

Former president Victor Ireland moved on to found Gaijinworks after WD's demise, and now he's resurfaced on NeoGaf to announce that a title will be publicly announced within a "month or two" for release before the summer. No ideas on what they might bring over, but resident Retronaut Jeremy Parish suggested RPG Soma Bringer and classic-style shooter Thunder Force 6, among others.

We wouldn't dare overlook cultural touchstones like the first few Superman and Batman films -- especially those of us who grew up poring over their illustrated adventures -- but superhero flicks have made leaps and bounds over the past eight years, becoming yearly studio tentpoles and reliable summer fun. Sure, we were excited to see our favorite heroes come to life on the silver screen pre-2000, but they always seemed to encounter roadblocks: licensing issues, swelled budgets, and special effects that were perpetually almost where they needed to be.

In 2000, the first X-Men film changed all that, breaking through to mainstream success behind a respected director (Bryan Singer, The Usual Suspects), competent casting, and everything you'd expect from a top-tier action film. It opened the floodgates for other long-brewing comic-book projects, like Sam Raimi's record-breaking Spider-Man and Ang Lee's art-house adaptation of Hulk. These days, it's huge success after huge success -- both Iron Man and The Dark Knight grossed crazy amounts of dough this past summer, and classic graphic novels like Sin City and Watchmen finally have the confidence of movie studios.

Used Game Prices Dropped 23.7% by End of 2008

In yet another indication of the myriad ways the recession is effecting the videogame industry, Video Game Price Charts reports (via Gamasutra) that the average price for a used game saw a significant drop in 2008, ending 23.7 percent lower than where it started in January.

As you can see in the chart above, the average price for a used game started at $12.69 at the beginning of January last year. But by November 3rd, the price tumbled to its lowest point of the year -- $8.57, a 32.5 percent decrease from the starting price. The average price ticked up again in the remaining days of 2008, and finally ended at $9.68, which was a decrease of 23.7 percent.

What's particularly interesting about these numbers -- and where you see the real effect of the recession -- is when you compare them to the price fluctuations of 2007. As you can see in the chart below, the average price of a used game saw a similarly downward trajectory in 2007, indicating a decrease over the year is natural. But the extent of the drop was far less drastic than that seen in 2008. The lowest point of the year was a 30.4% drop from the starting price, but then the price ticked back up by 26.6% for a total loss of only 11.8% of the starting value.

South Korean Teen Sets Fire to Warehouse after Poor Game Performance

~~Gamers~~ People do crazy things. Take for example a handful of recent happenings, including one person's attempt to blackmail a videogame developer/publisher with suicide and another calling a publisher's falling stock price an act of divine retribution. Now LiveNews (via Kotaku) is reporting the latest unbelievable videogame headling: A South Korean teen set fire to a nearby warehouse after an unsatisfying game session.

The 15-year-old boy, whose name and school have been withheld, started the fire this weekend in Chuncheon after "his computer games did not go well," claims the Yonhap news agency. The blaze caused an estimated 4 million South Korean won ($3,043) in damage.

Although current information does not indicate the name of the "computer game" the boy became frustrated with, it's worth noting that videogames are sometimes taken more seriously in South Korea than in other regions. With titles such as StarCraft having become a cultural touchstone as relevant to South Korea as a major sport is to the U.S., the weight of his virtual struggles may be greater than one would initially assume. Then again, we didn't see Peyton Manning setting fire to any buildings after his frustrating loss to the Chargers this weekend.

Man, it's really hard to make a good adventure game. It's so hard to make one, in fact, that even veterans of the genre -- guys who've worked on indisputable classics -- sometimes stumble. Case in point: A Vampyre Story. A glance at the game's credits reveals names that should be immediately familiar to fans of LucasArts adventures like The Curse of Monkey Island. But somehow, even these genre vets managed to slather their latest offering with weaksauce. Not that A Vampyre Story is a bad game; it just lacks that critical "hook."

The main reason for this is that the game isn't funny. It tries hard to be, bless its little soul -- but tired puns, badly animated sight gags, and fart humor only get you so far these days. And it's also hamstrung by its failure to incorporate basic design conveniences. Perhaps it's because I've been playing Prince of Persia lately, but A Vampyre Story's long wait times drove me crazy. Exiting a location means thumb-twiddling while Mona -- the titular vampire -- ambles her hourglass frame sloooooowly over to the edge of the screen...and then more twiddling while the next screen loads. Why didn't the designers include a simple double-click-to-leave-instantly mechanic, ? la Monkey Island? And if it takes so long to get from place to place, why'd they include so many puzzles that require shuttling back and forth between locations?

Microsoft Suing To Recover Merchandise From Woolsworth

Former UK retail giant Woolsworth is on its way out of its business, but it still has a whole lots of Xbox 360s and games sitting in its warehouses. And now Microsoft wants it back.

The Times UK is reporting that Microsoft is preparing a legal again to reclaim millions of pounds of hardware and software stock being held by Woolsworth's distribution arm Entertainment UK. Although the stock has already been paid for, Microsoft has the right to reclaim it under rules that allow them to take it in lieu of debts.

Woolsworth is currently under administration by Deloitte, which would potentially be able to resell the merchandise on the cheap. In the meantime, the retailer will close the rest of its doors Tuesday. We'll just have to see if Microsoft can reclaim all of those unsold copies of Halo 3 before they're sent to the bargain bin.

Baiyon and Dylan Cuthbert of Q-games Share Behind-the-scenes Look at PixelJunk Eden

PixelJunk Eden stood out among the games of 2008 for its beguiling combination of artistic endeavor and game mechanic. Its fundamentally simple concept of swinging a cute little character around a space on strands of wire came alive through the interplay with the forms, colors, and sounds of its psychedelic gardens. Kyoto-based DJ/sound producer/artist/graphic designer Baiyon led the creative effort in putting together this multimedia artwork. Whenever I play the game it works some sort of magic that leaves me feeling relaxed. Taken as I've been by that spell, when Q-Games president and executive producer asked if I'd like to come down to Kyoto and talk with him and Baiyon about their experiences in making the game I didn't hesitate for moment. The conversation below happened when we all sat down together in a conference room at their offices a few days after TGS.

1UP: How did you guys wind up getting connected?

Dylan Cuthbert: At a party, there's a party near here at some friends...it's all interconnected, so, friends of ours who work at a company near here who did the web page for StarFox Command for Nintendo; they work at this company called Eniac. They also do a lot of other stuff. They do a lot of Nintendo's webpages.

Baiyon: Maybe Mother 3 too.

DC: It was a party, and King of Games was there as well, it's like an old network. I went to this party and met Baiyon there. But that wasn't the first time I'd heard of him. The first time I'd heard of him was through my wife whose friend said that there's a friend of hers who wanted to try getting into game design and he's an artist/musician type. So we'd actually looked at his stuff beforehand. And then we went to this party and met.

1UP: What about game design attracted you [Baiyon]?

B: Something that doesn't translate to movies or music is that the player is the center, the focus point, the main character in the experience.

Xbox 360 Achieves Record Christmas Sales in Europe

"2008 saw us grow faster than any of our competitors and we over-achieved in sales during the crucial Christmas selling period," boasted Chris Lewis, regional vice president of Microsoft's Xbox business in Europe, in a report from gamesindustry.biz. Officially, the company claims eight million Xbox 360s now roam the region -- an estimated one million more than Sony's PlayStation 3.

Lewis claimed the success, which nearly doubles the previous year's, "was only possible through our partnerships with retail and with publishers." He added that these partners contributed to building "a strong ecosystem in the region."

In the states, year-to-year sales of the 360 may not have grown quite so much. Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter predicts roughly 1.2 to 1.3 million 360s were sold during the month of December, a figure almost equal to the 1.26 million sold the same time last year. For the two months prior, numbers were equally flat. October saw an increase of only 5,000 (1.4%) units sold, while November yielded a slightly more substantial 66,000 (7.9%) unit increase over the previous year. Despite the smaller gains, expect a bit more number-touting and some always-enjoyable PR spin when the December 2008 NPD numbers are officially released later this month.

Massive Layoffs Imminent at Microsoft?

It looks like Sony isn't the only corporation with a videogaming division that's being hit hard by the global recession. According to a report by The Independent, Microsoft is considering the possibility of cutting at least 10 percent -- or maybe as much as 17 percent -- of its global workforce in an effort to save costs.

The story points to rumors that recently appeared on Fudzilla, where the scope of the potential cuts were first reported. According to Fudzilla, while some parts of Microsoft -- namely the volume licensing department and the Xbox division -- are doing well, other parts had to cut their expected sales in 2009 by as much as 90 percent. That means there would be far less work for the staff in these departments to do, and would therefore create a large amount of redundancies.

With about 90,000 Microsoft employees around the world, as many as 15,000 jobs could be threatened. Eliminating 10 percent of its workforce could save Microsoft up to $1.2 billion dollars a year, but it would also be the first mass layoffs in the company's 32-year history.

Traveller's Tales Source Says No Lego Harry Potter in 2009

It seems that there won't be any new Lego Harry Potter after all. At least, not in 2009. And that has opened the door for a whole new set of Lego-related rumors.

Eurogamer is reporting that one of their sources has told them that there will be no Lego Harry Potter in the next twelve months. It had been widely speculated that the popular franchise was due for an entry in the Lego series soon, especially with a new movie on the way, but obstacles such as Electronic Arts' Harry Potter publishing deal stand in the way. For now it looks like Potter fans will have to wait.

Don't despair though, Lego fans. In an interview with BBC Radio 1, Traveller's Tale producer Nick Ricks said, "There will be a LEGO game in 2009. And I think it's okay to say that you'll be a bit surprised."

Michael Pachter Offers Guesses On Holiday Console Sales

You probably gathered by now that the Wii did pretty well this holiday season, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 perhaps not as much. But we want educated guesses, and for that, we turn to Wedbush Morgan oracle Michael Pachter.

Pachter offered his thoughts on the upcoming NPD figures, telling videogaming247, "I haven?t done the work for NPD yet, but my guess is that 360 sales were flat or up a little, PS3 sales down a little, and Wii sales up more than 100%."

He added that he figured that would amount to "1.2 to 1.3 million 360s," around 700,000 PS3s and 3 million Wiis. So that would mean that things remained pretty much the same despite this holiday season Microsoft's aggressive pricing strategy and the PlayStation 3's LittleBigPlanet. Seems like the trends for this generation are pretty much set.

Airport Vending Machines Selling DS Systems and Games

Over the years, movies have shown a variety of insane inventions we could expect in the future -- flying cars, time machines, oppressive uniforms everyone in society would be forced to wear, etc. But how they failed to warn us about electronics-selling vending machines is beyond us: Like the U.K. vending machines that sell PlayStation 3 games we saw back in November, it looks like Best Buy is now distributing their own vending machines in airports that sell Nintendo DS systems and a variety of DS games (via Ars Technica). Surely, the future is now.

These "Best Buy Express" machines -- the one pictured above spotted at Atlanta International Airport -- offer such games as Mario Kart DS, Brain Age 2, and Guitar Hero: On Tour, just in case anyone is actually brave enough to be seen playing Guitar Hero: On Tour on a crowded flight. The games are priced the same as any other retailer, so there aren't even any steep markups you might expect for anything purchased inside of an airport.

It's worth noting that the machine apparently only sells DS systems and games (in addition to other electronics like digital cameras and headphones), and no PSP products. Might Nintendo have some sort of exclusive distribution deal with Best Buy... or did the retail chain decide on its own that PSP games weren't worth stocking? More than likely it's the former, but still, it's an interesting indication of how much more visible the DS is to the general public these days.

Mirror's Edge Played with the Wii Balance Board (Not Really)

Join us, dear reader, as we venture into a terrifying yet exciting alternate reality. A reality where tacos don't exist, where an 8-8 football team doesn't somehow make it into the Divisional NFL Playoff week, and -- most significantly -- where Mirror's Edge was not made for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but for the Wii instead.

Just what would it be like to play Mirror's Edge if it did have Wiimote and Balance Board support? We may never know for sure, but thanks to the video above (via NintendoWiiFanboy), we have a pretty good idea. For whatever reason, someone decided to design and demonstrate their own Balance Board controls for the game, and while they're not actually playing with the board, through the magic of editing, it sure looks like they are.

The controls are kind of ingenious: It looks like tapping the top of the board with your toes would generate up-movement (jumping, vaulting, etc.), while tapping the bottom of the board with your heels would generate down-movement (sliding, rolling, etc.). Add in a few Wii remote gestures for things like opening doors, fighting, and climbing up onto ledges from cat-hangs, and you have a complete, efficient Mirror's Edge control scheme.

Wii Video Channel Striking Fear in Japanese TV Industry

Just how powerful is the Wii in Japan? This powerful: The mere announcement of a streaming video channel for the ubiquitous console is already causing some Japanese television executives to quake in their boots.

Late in December, Nintendo announced they'd be launching just such a video-on-demand channel for the Wii in Japan this year. They've partnered with Dentsu Inc., a leading advertising firm in Japan, to produce original programming for the channel that'll be ad-supported, and they'll also be soliciting other businesses to produce original content as well. And according to a report by the Times Online (via Shacknews), it's all bad news for the Japanese television industry.

According to one senior executive at Fuji Television (the biggest commercial broadcaster in Japan), the prospect of a successful Wii video channel -- one where Nintendo's goal of making the Wii the "centerpiece of the living room" became a reality -- would be "the stuff of television producers' nightmares." The same executive said this is particularly bad timing for such a threat to Japanese TV broadcasting to emerge, as the industry has been criticized for relying "too heavily on repeats and celebrity formats." An original slate of programming designed specifically for Wii owners could offer the sort of variety that may draw television viewers in.

'Two or Three' New PixelJunk Games in 2009

If you're a big fan of Q-Games' PixelJunk series of downloadable titles, then 2009 is going to be a good year for you. In a post on the PlayStation.Blog, Q-Games president Dylan Cuthbert recounts some of his favorite games of 2008, and then ends with a coy tease: "Here's to an amazing 2009 for gaming as I am sure it is going to be, what with two or three more PixelJunk titles coming out, right!?"

So being the expert mathematicians that we are, we can deduce this means there will be at least two new PixelJunk games this year, and maybe even three. We know what one of them will be: Back in December, Cuthbert revealed (via Kotaku) that a PSP version of PixelJunk Monsters (PS3 version pictured above) was planned for 2009, which would be "a bit more" than just a straight port.

As for the other one or two games, there's no telling what they could be. Our guess? Q-Games will get into the whole self-improvement phase, and release PixelJunk My Spanish Coach.

Microsoft Part of Virtual Meetings Study on Sony's Home

Advanced Workplace Associates (AWA), a UK-based management consulting firm, plans to run what it terms a "Virtual Working trial in Cyberspace involving leaders from some of the leading companies in the world" this coming February. The experiment will be lead by two faculty members from the University of Portsmouth with backgrounds in in-game learning and collaborative traditions. Andrew Mawson, managing director of AWA, explained how it will work:

AWA's psychologists will record and analyse the behaviours exhibited by participants and their avatars during the trial and its conclusion we will establish participants' perceptions of the experience, their views on the usefulness of the virtual environments and their ideas on applications where the technology could be used within their organisations.

Along with Microsoft the announcement of the project names financial companies Merrill Lynch, Ernst and Young, and others with "large white collar worker populations" as participants.

While the study says a lot about the versatility of virtual worlds such as Home, it could be argued that it only helps reinforce the argument that the service stands more as supplemental than essential to the core gaming experience on the PS3. Microsoft being a part of this study draws into focus some of the differences between Home and Live. While Live's structure wouldn't be conducive to this sort of business application, it excels at getting gamers together to play online. Not that the study is something Sony is doing to promote Home, but it would be welcome to report on more gaming applications of the service instead of another story that emphasizes the "Second Life on a console" tag.

Nielsen Numbers Put PS2 as 2008's 'Most-Played' Console

According to Gamasutra, research from media research company Nielsen revealed the "most-played" console of 2008 wasn't the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or even the ludicrously-selling Wii. Last-generation's juggernaut the PlayStation 2 claims the top spot accounting for a substantial 31.7 percent of total time played. In comparison, the 360 occupied 17.2 percent of total time played and the Wii came in with a surprisingly small 13.4 percent. As further evidence of the PS3's struggles it came in well behind at 7.3 percent. That shockingly put it below the 9.7 percent of play time managed by the outdated original Xbox, which hasn't been really supported since the launch of the 360.

On the PC, placement was somewhat more predictable. World of Warcraft took the "most-played" top spot with each player averaging 671 minutes played per week (0.723% of gamers) followed by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare with 404 minutes per week (0.163% of gamers). Arguably most unexpected of all is the original Halo's rank as the third most-played PC game, with 295 minutes per week (.092% of gamers). Halo 2, whch is also available on the PC, failed to enter the top 10. Maybe people just prefer the original's overpowered pistol to the sequel's dual-wielding madness.

Third Party Drum Kit has Exquisite 360 D-Pad

Still looking for the perfect Xbox 360 d-pad for all those Live Arcade classics? Well Ars Technica may have stumbled on the answer, although it's not the most efficient (or cheapest) solution: Turns out the Mad Catz Portable Drum Kit just happens to have a d-pad controller remarkably similar to an old Super Nintendo pad.

The kit comes with four loose drum pads, which all connect to a central hub with a d-pad and four face buttons. But as you can see above, removing the pads from the hub leaves you with what seems to be the perfect old-school controller, with a d-pad Ars Technica says is "much, much better than what you get on the regular 360 controller."

But before you run out and buy the $40 drum kit just to use the snazzy d-pad with Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, be warned that there's a catch -- the hub only has four face buttons and no shoulder buttons, so it won't work with any game that requires more than four buttons. So it's perfect for Pac-Man: Championship Edition, as Ars Technica reports, but not so useful for Street Fighter. Alas, it seems like the quest for the perfect fighting game controller on the 360 continues.

Roy Orbison Pack Coming to Rock Band Next Week

News slipped just before the holiday break that Harmonix was readying some sort of Roy Orbison downloadable content for Rock Band, and now we have the official details. The "Roy Orbison Pack 01" will be available next Tuesday on the Xbox Live Marketplace, but, for some reason, not until Thursday, January 15 on the PlayStation Network. It'll bring the following six songs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend:

"Claudette"
"In Dreams"
"Mean Woman Blues"
"Oh, Pretty Woman"
"Ooby Dooby"
"You Got It"

All tracks are master recordings, and as usual, they can be purchased either individually for 160 Microsoft Points ($1.99) or you can get the whole set for 800 Microsoft Points ($9.99). And yes, it's officially called the "Roy Orbison Pack 01." While there's no mention of it in the press release, clearly this indicates there will be more Orbison DLC coming in the future.

Researchers use PS3s to Discover Internet Security Flaw

Like all ominously powerful technology, the PlayStation 3 can be used for great good or, it seems, potentially terrible evil. According to Computer World, an international team of security researchers used a farm of 200 PS3s to discover a flaw in an algorithm used to create authentication certificates for secured websites.

The researchers used the PS3s to exploit a bug in the MD5 hashing algorithm used to generate unique certificates to prove a secured website is actually what it purports itself to be. The certificates work like digital fingerprints that all have a unique numerical value, but the researchers were able to hack into VeriSign Inc.'s RapidSLL.com certificate authority site, exploit the MD5 bug, and create fake certificates that shared the same values. In plain terms: This could, theoretically, be used by hackers to create phony websites that have seemingly legitimate authentication certificates, and then use these fake sites to steal personal information that an unwitting user may feed into it.

While that sounds like scary stuff, the researchers evidently don't believe a similar real-world attack is likely (this might have something to do with the fact that they needed 200 PS3s to accomplish it). Still, the researches stressed that it's an important warning. "It's a wake-up call for anyone still using MD5," said David Molnar, a member of the team from the University of California, Berkley.
